Jim graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree with honors from Providence College in 1982 and received his J.D. from Ohio Northern University in 1985. He was admitted to the Rhode Island Bar in 1985 and the Massachusetts Bar in 1995. He was admitted to the United States District Court for the District of Rhode Island in 1986 and the United States Army Court of Military review in 1986.

Jim initially joined HCC in 1985 in the litigation department. He then accepted a commission in the United State Army's Judge Advocate General's Corps in 1986 and served in active duty as a trial counsel, military magistrate and claims judge advocate from 1986 through 1989. He rejoined HCC in 1989 in the workers' compensation section which consists of six full-time attorneys devoted exclusively to the defense of employers and insurers. He is a member of the Rhode Island Workers' Compensation Bench Bar Committee and the Rhode Island Bar Association. He is also a Lt. Col. In the Rhode Island Army National Guard where he serves as a military judge.
